What a Difference a Frame Makes

Last Fall, I took an amazing art workshop with John MacDonald. It was one of the best workshops I have ever taken, going into depth about composition, color harmony, value studies and tonalism.

Like many artists, I struggle knowing when a painting is done, often overworking it before realizing it didn’t need anything more. One tool John showed me was to look at my painting from a distance and then put it in a plain, black frame. The difference framed and unframed was profound.

I had used some gallery wrapped canvas to paint on before. You know, the canvas that is 1 inch think and is painted on the sides, too. No more. I’m sticking with the frames and the wow factor.

If you paint, check out all John‘s materials and you tube videos. If you don’t paint, you’ll still love looking at his works. http://jmacdonald.com
