The ancient Greek Goddess Iris was a messenger who acted as a link between heaven and earth. In the Middle Ages the purple iris became associated with the French monarchy and the  resultant fleur-de-lis eventually became the symbol of France. It's been used as a perfume and a medicinal remedy. But it's always been known as a symbol of hope, faith and courage. I wonder if Vincent knew that.
